The Flames continue their four-event fall golf schedule this upcoming week when Liberty participates in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.

The two-day, 54-hole event gets underway on Sunday morning at the Quail Valley Golf Club (par 72, 7,460 yards) in Vero Beach, Fla.

The Flames are playing in their second event in a row hosted by Michigan State. The Spartans also hosted the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Sept. 26-28, at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.

The 16-team field includes 10 teams that are currently ranked inside the first Golfstat top-75 rankings of the year: Notre Dame (No. 29), Cincinnati (No. 32), North Florida (No. 42), Missouri (No. 45), Northwestern (No. 48), Indiana (No. 49), Michigan State (No. 56), Liberty (No. 58), Wisconsin (No. 59) and Memphis (No. 70).

Tournament Reflections – Liberty’s Previous Showing at the Quail Valley Collegiate:  

  • The Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational is the second of five first-time events on Liberty’s 2022-23 schedule.
  • Liberty made its first-ever appearance at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in late September, finishing in fifth place out of 18 teams.
  • The Flames will also make their first-ever appearances at the Prestige Invitational (Feb. 20-22), the Schenkel Invitational (March 17-19) and the Mossy Oak Collegiate Championship (April 3-4).

From the 18th Green – Recapping Liberty’s Last Time Out

  • The Flames are coming off a fifth place showing at the Folds of Honor Collegiate, held Sept. 26-28 at the American Dunes Golf Club.
  • Liberty finished in fifth place in the 18-team field, carding a 15-over par 879 (290-293-296).
  • Illinois easily won the tournament by 15 strokes, posting a winning score of 10-under par 854 (292-277-285).
  • Liberty’s Jonathan Yaun (69-69-73) and NC State’s Maximillian Steinlechner (73-69-69) finished tied atop the 90-man leaderboard with a 5-under par 211.
  • Yaun captured the tournament’s medalist honors with a 60-foot chip-in for the win on the second playoff hole.
  • This is the second time in Yaun’s career he has claimed medalist honors. He shared the individual title at the Royal Oak Intercollegiate in 2019 (Oct. 21-22), posting an 8-under par 205 (73-65-67) at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, Texas.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes

  • The Flames entered the 2022-23 season as one of 11 teams in the country who have advanced to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship each of the last three years.
  • The 11-team group includes Arizona State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Liberty, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Texas, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
  • Liberty finished the 2021-22 golf season ranked No. 35 in the final Golfstat rankings and No. 38 in the final Golfweek rankings.
  • Since 2011, Liberty has captured six conference titles in two different conferences.
  • Liberty captured the conference title five times as a member of the Big South Conference (2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018).
  • Liberty won its first-ever ASUN Conference championship in 2021.
  • The Flames have advanced to the NCAA Regionals 10 of the last 11 regional events and to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship four times in program history (2012, 2019, 2021 and 2022).
  • Liberty dominated play on the par-5 holes during the 2021-22 season and ranked No. 27 in the country in par-5 scoring average (4.74).
  • The Flames also ranked No. 30 in the country in birdies last year (589) and No. 46 in last round scoring (72.45).
  • Jonathan Yaun paced Liberty’s par-5 scoring efforts during the 2021-22 season as he individual ranked No. 141 in the country in par-5 scoring (4.64).
