Flames Claim Runner-Up Finish at Quail Valley Collegiate
A near record-setting performance at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational allowed the Flames to claim the runner-up spot at the Michigan State-hosted event.
Liberty finished the tournament with a 36-under par 828 (278-275-275) carded during three trips around the Quail Valley Golf Club (par 72, 7,460 yards). The 828 marked the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in program history.
The Flames shared second place with the tournament host, as the Spartans matched Liberty’s 36-under par 828 (277-286-265), including a closing round 23-under par 265.
Liberty and Michigan State finished three shots behind No. 42 North Florida. The Ospreys captured the team title with a winning score of 39-under par 825 (275-273-277).
Liberty finished two shots clear of No. 32 Cincinnati’s 34-under par 830 (279-280-271) and three shots ahead of No. 48 Northwestern’s 33-under par 831 (281-281-269).
Eight players in the 84-man field posted double-digit under-par scores. Indiana’s Drew Salyers claimed medalist honors with a winning score of 17-under par 199 (65-65-69).
Liberty’s Josh Ryan joined the group of eight to place the way for the Flames. The freshman finished tied for seventh place with a 10-under par 206 (68-72-66).
The Flames did most of their scoring on the par-5 holes as Liberty led the 16-team field in par-5 scoring with a 4.33 scoring average (40-under par). Ryan and Connor Polender individually led the field in the statistical category (4.08 scoring average/11-under par).
Polender (71-69-68) and Yaun (72-68-68), who is individually ranked No. 77 in the country, shared 14th place with an 8-under par 208. Yaun paced Liberty in the event with 18 total birdies.
