    Head Coach Hugh Freeze
WR Demario Douglas and OL Cooper McCaw

The Flames held their first practice of the 2022 football season, Friday morning, inside the Liberty Football Practice Facility.

Following the two-plus hour workout, fourth-year head coach Hugh Freeze, wide receiver Demario Douglas and offensive lineman Cooper McCaw spoke with the media to recap the workout.

Douglas finished the 2021 season as Liberty’s leading receiver with 52 receptions for 701 yards and six touchdowns. The rising redshirt sophomore also ranked No. 5 in the country, last season, in punt returns for a touchdown (1) and No. 33 in average punt return yards (6.8).

McCaw is Liberty’s most experienced returning offensive lineman. The redshirt senior has played in 48 career games and has started 26 career games at right tackle. Last year, McCaw was part of an offensive line that helped Liberty rank No. 25 in the country in scoring offense (33.6 points per game).

Liberty finished the 2021 season with an 8-5 record. The Flames ended the year by defeating Eastern Michigan in the LendingTree Bowl in Mobile, Ala., marking Liberty’s third-straight bowl game win.

Liberty is just one of five FBS teams in the country who have won a bowl game each of the last three seasons, joining Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana.

The Flames finished the 2021 season ranked No. 8 in the country in passing yards per completion (14.69) and No. 35 in first down offense (297) and total offense (436.2 yards per game).
