Liberty’s Goncalo Ferreira captured his first career fall singles title at the Duke James Bonk Invite, highlighting day two for the Flames at Cary Tennis Park.

Ferreira went 2-0 on the day, winning both matches in straight sets. He claimed the C singles draw crown with a two-set victory against ETSU’s Hugo Lobo, 6-3, 6-2.

Through two days of competition, Liberty has won seven total matches (six singles, one doubles).

Key Stats & Notes

• Ferreira is 3-0 in singles this weekend. He bested Elon’s Esteban Penagos 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals prior to his win in the championship.

• Junior Josh Wilson (A singles draw) qualified for the semifinals with a Saturday morning 6-4, 6-4 win over Duke’s Connor Krug. In the semifinals, Wilson was topped by NC State’s Robin Catry 6-1, 6-4.

•  Wilson will meet Wake Forest’s Juan Lopez de Azcona in the third place match, Sunday at 11 a.m.

•  The Flames’ Deji Thomas-Smith lost his Saturday morning quarterfinal match of the B singles bracket to No. 3 seed Jake Krug of Duke. Thomas-Smith fell in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) to ETSU’s Juan Sebastian Zabala in his next match.

•  Thomas-Smith will square off against Elon’s Daniel Martin on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the seventh place match.

•  Liberty did not compete in doubles today. Wilson and Ferreira will take on Duke’s Jake Krug and Connor Krug in the B doubles draw third place contest.
