ASUN Release

Liberty’s Lizzy Ferguson has been named the back-to-back ASUN Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.

Ferguson is the first player in program history to earn ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks. This is Liberty’s 18th all-time defensive player of the week award in five seasons in the ASUN. Ferguson is also receiving her third total weekly accolade this season. In addition to being named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week a week ago, the Fort Washington, Pa. native was the ASUN Player of the Week back on Feb. 28.

Ferguson enjoyed another strong week with five ground balls, three caused turnovers, 28 draw controls, three goals and three points in two Lady Flames home wins over Winthrop (22-7 final) and Furman (19-6 final), last week. The attacker notched a career-best 17 draw controls versus the Winthrop Eagles, shattering the previous program record of 13. Ferguson’s 17 draws are currently the fifth most of any player in the NCAA this spring.

Ferguson’s 17 draws helped Liberty to a 19-11 edge in the category. She added three ground balls and three caused turnovers in that contest, with the hosts dominating in ground balls (28-16) and caused turnovers (17-8) versus Winthrop. The senior also scored two goals in the game.

On Saturday versus the Furman Paladins, Ferguson scooped up two ground balls and led all players again with 11 draw controls while adding one goal. Ferguson’s 11 draws gave her 79 for the season in only nine games. She ranks fourth nationally in draw controls per game (8.78).

Ferguson’s 79 draws are tied for the most of any player in a season in program history. Through nine games this season, she has 79 draws (No. 1 on team), 13 ground balls (No. 2 on team), 12 caused turnovers (No. 2 on team), 16 goals (No. 2 on team), one assist and 17 points (No. 4 on team)

Ferguson and Liberty are 3-1 at home in 2023 and average 15.25 goals per game at the Liberty Lacrosse Field while allowing only 7.25 goals per contest.

The Lady Flames (4-5, 0-0 ASUN) are back in action on Saturday afternoon for their ASUN opener at No. 21 Jacksonville (5-5, 1-0 ASUN). First draw is 1 p.m. at Rock Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
