    ASUN Release

Alexa Evernham of the Liberty women’s lacrosse team earned her first career ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honor, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.

Evernham’s award comes after the defender shared the team lead with four caused turnovers and scooped up three ground balls in home games last week versus No. 7 Duke and Delaware State. Evernham is Liberty’s second straight ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honoree and third of the season. Midfielder Mia Toscano garnered the distinction a week ago, while defender Mikayla Coghill received the award on March 15.

Last Tuesday against the Blue Devils, Evernham paced Liberty with four caused turnovers, and the Lady Flames had 16 caused turnovers in a narrow 8-7 loss. Evernham and the Lady Flames defense held Duke to a season-low eight goals (came in averaging 19.50/game), seven goals below their lowest previous total of the season coming in (15 goals vs. No. 14 Notre Dame). The Swedesboro, N.J. native also collected two ground balls in the game, as Liberty tallied 20 ground balls against Duke.

In Saturday’s ASUN opener versus Delaware State, Evernham scored her first career goal and had her third career assist in Liberty’s 22-5 triumph over the Hornets. The defender also had a ground ball.

In 12 games this season, Evernham leads the team with 20 caused turnovers and ranks third on the squad with 26 ground balls. The captain’s 20 caused turnovers are already a single-season career high, and she is one ground ball away from matching her career high (27, 2021). Evernham is No. 24 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (1.67) and leads the ASUN in the category. Liberty is currently second in the country as a team in caused turnovers per game (13.17) and fourth in ground balls per game (20.75).

Evernham and Liberty (7-5, 1-0 ASUN) will host Stetson (3-8, 0-1 ASUN) in an ASUN game, Saturday afternoon. First draw is noon at the Liberty Lacrosse Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
