Dutch Guard Steenbergen Signs with Liberty

4/13/2022 10:05:25 PM | Women's Basketball

Pien Steenbergen, a 6-1 guard from the Netherlands, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Liberty University for the 2022-23 academic year.

She is the second member of the incoming freshman class, joining 6-3 center Caroline Shiery of Harrisburg, Pa., who signed in November.

Pien Steenbergen (G, 6-1, Berlicum, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands)

Steenbergen comes to Liberty after graduating from Calandlyceum in Amsterdam. She averaged 16.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 4.5 spg during her final season of competition.

Steenbergen earned the Best U20 Player Award at this year’s European Girls Basketball League (EGBL) and came in third in the U17 shooting contest.

She is the first player from the Netherlands to join the Lady Flames since Irene Sloof (1998-2001).

What They’re Saying about Pien Steenbergen

“Pien is one of the bright young basketball shining stars of the Netherlands. She has benefitted from exceptional training and has experienced a high level of national and international competition. Pien has great size and speed for a perimeter player with the ability to score from three-point range and attack the rim. She actually loves to excel on defense – a coach’s dream! I absolutely love her competitiveness and desire to win. We are really excited to see her energy and talent impact the success of our program.”

Carey Green, Liberty Women’s Basketball Head Coach

“I am so excited for Pien that she has found Liberty University to make the next step in her basketball career. It is not only a good fit for her on the court, but the family atmosphere is exactly what Pien needs to thrive and grow as a person as well. I am looking forward to following the progress of Pien and the team during the time that she is in Lynchburg.”

Molly McDowell, CTO Amsterdam Head Coach
