Coleman to Represent Team USA at World Athletics U20 Championships
Liberty’s Desmond Coleman will represent Team USA in the men’s discus at the World Athletics U20 Championships, this weekend in Cali, Colombia. The USATF U20 men’s discus champion will take part in the qualifying round Friday morning, attempting to qualify for Saturday afternoon’s event final at Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium.
Men’s discus qualifying is set to begin Friday at 10:25 a.m. Eastern with the final slated for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Coverage of the meet will air on Peacock, while live results and a live audio broadcast are available on the World Athletics website.
Coleman punched his ticket to Colombia by capturing the USATF U20 men’s discus championship on June 25 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Two days after celebrating his 19th birthday, Coleman unleashed a throw of 197-2 in round three. That mark held off runner-up Kevin Grubbs of Sam Houston State’s 196-11 effort for the victory. Future Conference USA foes Coleman and Grubbs will represent Team USA in the event this weekend.
Coleman’s mark of 197-2 from the USATF U20 meet has him seeded 11th among the 23 entrants. The German duo of Mika Sosna (234-2) and Marius Karges (228-0) tops the pre-meet performance list.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Coleman was redshirted during his first indoor and outdoor track & field season at Liberty in 2022. Competing unattached, his top effort with the collegiate discus was 177-5, which earned Coleman a fourth-place finish at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on May 4.
