Coleman Finishes 7th in Men’s Discus at World Athletics U20 Championships
Representing Team USA, Liberty’s Desmond Coleman finished seventh in the men’s discus final at the World Athletics U20 Championships on Saturday, the meet’s final day of competition at Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali, Colombia.
Coleman reached a personal-best 198-3 on his third attempt Saturday afternoon, placing seventh among the 12 finalists. It marked the best finish at this meet by a Team USA men’s discus thrower since 2012, when Dalton Rowan took seventh place in Barcelona, Spain.
Coleman opened his competition in Colombia on Friday, reaching 196-2 for sixth place in the qualifying round to earn a berth in Saturday’s final.
Coleman punched his ticket to Colombia by capturing the USATF U20 men’s discus championship on June 25 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Two days after celebrating his 19th birthday, Coleman unleashed a throw of 197-2 in round three. That mark held off runner-up Kevin Grubbs of Sam Houston State’s 196-11 effort for the victory. Grubbs joined Coleman in Saturday’s final, coming in ninth with a top distance of 197-2.
Germany finished 1-2 in the men’s discus final, thanks to Marius Karges (215-0) and Mika Sosna (209-7).
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Coleman was redshirted during his first indoor and outdoor track & field season at Liberty in 2022. Competing unattached, his top effort with the collegiate discus was 177-5, which earned Coleman a fourth-place finish at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on May 4. That would rank No. 8 all-time for the Flames if Coleman was representing Liberty during the competition.
