Coghill Earns 1st Career ASUN Defensive Player of Week Honor

    Mar 15, 2022 | Lynchburg Va | Lacrosse

    ASUN Release

Mikayla Coghill of the Liberty lacrosse team has been selected as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week. The honor is the first weekly award of Coghill’s career.

Coghill, a junior who was a 2021 ASUN All-Conference second team honoree, paced the squad with seven caused turnovers and tied for the team lead with eight ground balls in three games last week. Against No. 12 Florida on Wednesday, the defender had career bests in both ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (6).

She became only the second player in program history to tally at least seven ground balls and six caused turnovers in a single game. Coghill’s six caused turnovers are tied for the third most in a game in school history.

Coghill recorded one ground ball and one caused turnover at UC Davis, last Friday. Through eight games this season (all starts), Coghill is tied for the team lead with 15 caused turnovers and ranks fourth with 18 ground balls. She is currently No. 14 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (1.88). Coghill and the Lady Flames rank third nationally in caused turnovers per game (13.38) and ground balls per game (21.50).

Coghill is Liberty’s second ASUN weekly award winner, joining Jordan Baerga. Baerga was named ASUN Player of the Week, Feb. 15.

Coghill and Liberty (4-4) will return to action at Cincinnati (3-5), Sunday afternoon. First draw between the Lady Flames and Bearcats is slated for noon at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
