Coach Castro and Liberty Champs Recap Regional

    Mar 7, 2011 | Lynchburg Va | Wrestling

Liberty wrestling claimed its fifth-consecutive NCAA East Regional Championship last evening behind individual titles from four grapplers.

Robert Jillard (125), T. J. Mitchell (133) and Royal Brettrager II (174) each earn their way to the 2011 NCAA National Wrestling Championships in their first time competing in the East Regional Championship. Jillard and Brettrager are both true freshmen, while Mitchell is a redshirt junior.

Redshirt senior Chad Porter (165) will make his fourth trip to the national event, and will look to make some noise as he has done in the past. Porter's two wins on Sunday improved his season record to 21-9, giving him 20-win seasons each year of his career.

Head Coach Jesse Castro was honored with his fourth East Region Coach of the Year award after the Flames won their fifth-straight crown. The award is voted on by the East Region coaches.

After the hardware was handed out, the Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce had a chance to chat with the four individual champions as well as Coach Castro. Each of the grapplers reviewed their tournament experience and what they look forward to at nationals, while Coach Castro broke down several of the match ups in the tournament as well as talking about the adversity his team had to overcome at the event.

The NCAA National Wrestling Championships take place March 17-19 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The event is sold out for the third-consecutive year.
