Blackbirds Move Past Lady Flames, 19-9

3/14/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

The Liberty women's lacrosse team stepped out of conference on Sunday, squaring off against Long Island in the first of two contests in the Sunshine State. Unfortunately, the Lady Flames were unable to begin their spring break on a positive note, falling to the Blackbirds, 19-9.

Liberty falls to 1-2 this season, while Long Island picks up its first win of 2010, improving to 1-4 on the year.

Long Island jumped out to an early lead with a quartet of goals, highlighted by two Claire Ranney markers to hold a 4-0 advantage at 16:35. Liberty lit up the scoreboard 11 seconds later, halting the Blackbirds scoring streak with a goal by captain Karen Yates (Sr., Lancaster, Pa.) to trim the deficit, 4-1.

After Sara Lanoir found the net to put the Blackbirds up 5-1 at 15:41, Liberty's Anna Starling (So., Dallas Texas) answered 15 seconds later with a tally of her own to cut it back to three, 5-2. Long Island then went on another 4-0 run over the ensuing 8:25 to take a 9-2 lead at the 7:00 mark.

In the final seven minutes of the period, Liberty outscored the Blackbirds 3-1, as Lauren See (Fr., Strasburg, Pa.) posted all three of the Lady Flames' markers. See's seven-minute hat trick helped Liberty cut it to five at halftime, 10-5.

In the second period, Long Island picked up where it left off, netting two-straight goals to stretch the margin to 12-5 at 27:46. A six-minute drought occurred until either team found the net. Liberty's Amanada Hornick (So., Millersville, Md.) broke the ice at 21:46, scoring her first career goal to make it 12-6.

Long Island responded by going on a 3-0 spurt to increase its advantage to nine, 15-6, with 13:59 remaining in the game. Liberty then outscored the Blackbirds 3-1 over the next 4:56, with goals from Sierra Clearwater (So., Mechanicsville, Md.) Kristin Crowley (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Yates, cutting it to seven, 16-9, with 9:03 left on the clock. Long Island closed out the contest with three-straight goals by Jenna Schauder, to take the matchup, 19-9.

See led the Liberty attack with three goals, followed by Yates with two. Crowley scooped up five ground balls in the contest, while Yates, Laura Miller (Jr., Woodbridge, Va.) and goalie Rebekah Leutters (Sr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) each had four. Leutters also finished with 11 saves.

Schauder closed out the contest with five goals for Long Island, followed by Ranney and Christie Wienkowski who each finished with a hat trick. Long Island took advantage of free position attempts, scoring on 5-of-7 eight-meter shots.

Liberty returns to action on Thursday, taking on fellow NLC competitor Jacksonville (2-4, 1-0 NLC). The Dolphins are coming off a 12-4 loss to Temple, which they suffered on Friday. The first draw between Liberty and Jacksonville is set for 6 p.m.
