Betts Named to 3rd ASUN All-Academic Team Image

Betts Named to 3rd ASUN All-Academic Team

Liberty’s Gray Betts has been named to the 2023 ASUN Baseball All-Academic for the third time, the conference announced this afternoon.

The team honors players for both their achievements in the classroom and on the field. Betts was also selected to the 2021 and 2022 ASUN All-Academic Teams.

Betts posted a 3.96 GPA while earning his master’s degree in Christian ministry this spring and as an undergraduate, had a 3.92 GPA while earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting. The senior is a two-time College Sports Creators Academic All-District team member (2021 & 2023) and has been a member of the ASUN Academic Honor Roll five times.

 A two-time ASUN All-Conference catcher and All-Tournament team member, Betts has split time between catcher and second base this season. For the second consecutive season, he was named to the Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List. One of three Flames to start all 54 games this season, he started the year as Liberty’s starting catcher, before moving to second base in a 4-2 victory over Central Arkansas on April 6. Betts has hit .255 with 36 RBI and 31 runs scored this season. He has walked 22 times and has a .334 on base percentage.

Betts has hit .288 over 237 games and is one of 23 Flames in program history with 200 or more hits during his career. The Raleigh, N.C., native enters this week’s ASUN Baseball Championship tied for third on Liberty’s all-time hit list with 258. He is also third on the program’s runs scored list with 172. In addition, he is second in school history with 135 career bases on balls.

  

The ASUN will announce its conference awards and all-conference team later this afternoon.
