Berkman Named Navy Classic Co-MVP, Brown Makes All-Classic Team

11/29/2021 3:13:34 PM | Women's Basketball

After the Lady Flames’ 2-0 showing at the Navy Classic, Liberty’s Mya Berkman was named the event’s co-MVP. Teammate Dee Brown joined Berkman on the All-Classic Team.

Berkman shared the MVP award with Amaya Scott, who helped George Mason match Liberty’s 2-0 record at the event contested Saturday and Sunday at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md.

Berkman averaged 11.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg as Liberty defeated host Navy (63-42) and Bowling Green (76-72). The center from Marble Falls, Texas contributed a team-high 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds (nine offensive) to Sunday’s victory over Bowling Green.

Berkman posted six points, six rebounds and an assist during the fourth quarter on Sunday, helping Liberty rally from a four-point deficit to win. Her three-point play with 4:40 remaining in the game put the Lady Flames on top for good.

Berkman’s double-double was her third of the season and the fourth of her career. Her 15 rebounds were the most by a Lady Flame since Jan. 11, 2020, when Keyen Green grabbed 16 boards against Jacksonville.

A guard from Chicago, Ill., Brown averaged 8.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.0 spg for the weekend. Her best effort also came against Bowling Green, as Brown matched her season high of 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and tied for the team lead in both assists (3) and steals (2) in a team-high 33 minutes played.

Off to its best start since 2009-10 at 5-1, Liberty will face a pair of Big South Conference opponents this week. The Lady Flames will travel to Hampton Wednesday at 7 p.m. before returning to Liberty Arena for a Saturday 7 p.m. clash with defending Big South champion High Point.
