Bailey, Steenbergen Earn ASUN WBB Weekly Awards

    Dec 19, 2022 | Lynchburg Va | Women's Basketball

After helping Liberty post a pair of victories in four days, Jordan Bailey and Pien Steenbergen claimed the Lady Flames’ first ASUN Conference weekly honors of the season. Bailey is the ASUN Player of the Week for the first time in her career, while Steenbergen was tabbed ASUN Freshman of the Week.

A native of Colbert, Ga., Bailey is just the fourth different Lady Flame to be named ASUN Player of the week during Liberty’s five years in the conference, joining Ashtyn Baker, Emily Lytle and Bridgette Rettstatt. Bailey averaged a team-high 15.5 ppg in victories over Limestone and Washington.

Bailey got her week started by contributing 12 points and four rebounds in just 18 minutes during a 75-48 home triumph over Limestone on Thursday.

She then led all players with 19 points during a 66-54 victory at Washington on Sunday, matching her career high in the Lady Flames’ first-ever triumph over a Pac-12 opponent. Bailey scored six points as part of a 24-7 run to end the first half, converting a 13-point deficit into a lead which Liberty never relinquished. She then single-handedly outscored Washington by a 9-8 count during the third quarter.

Steenbergen’s first career conference award comes after she averaged 8.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg for the week. The native of Berlicum, Netherlands posted career highs for points (11), rebounds (game-high 8) and three-pointers made (3) while also tallying two assists, two steals and her first career blocked shot against Limestone.

Steenbergen then notched six points, two boards and an assist in 12 minutes off the bench at Washington on Sunday. She knocked down two-of-three attempts from beyond the arc against the Huskies, closing out a five-of-seven week from three-point range.

Steenbergen is the Lady Flames’ first ASUN Freshman of the Week since Emma Hess claimed the honor on Dec. 6, 2021.

Liberty (5-5) will close out its stay at the Husky Classic and the non-conference portion of its schedule at 3 p.m. this afternoon with its first-ever matchup against SIUE (1-8).
