No. 2 seed Liberty successfully defended its BIG EAST crown, taking down top seed and host Old Dominion 3-1 in the title game of the 2022 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, Sunday at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

Liberty improves to 12-7 and has won the BIG EAST title in back-to-back years. The Lady Flames receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. Liberty will find out where it will head in the NCAA Tournament this evening at 10 p.m. The NCAA Field Hockey Selection show can be found on NCAA.com. The Lady Flames will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time program history.

Old Dominion falls to 15-3 on the season. The Monarchs see their 10-game winning streak snapped.

Liberty featured four players on the BIG EAST All-Tournament team, led by BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player Azul Iritxity Irigoyen. Bethany Dykema, who scored the game-winning goal in the latter stages of the fourth quarter, was also tabbed to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team along with Martu Cian and Jodie Conolly.

Turning Point

After Jodie Conolly’s initial shot was blocked, Reagan Underwood sent a ball from the middle of the circle onto the stick of Dykema. Dykema put the ball past ODU goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray for a 2-1 lead.

The Monarchs pulled MacGillivray for the final 2:10, and Liberty added an insurance goal with 19 seconds to play in the game. Martu Cian scored on an empty net, assisted by Pima Iturraspe, to settle the final score at 3-1.

Key Stats & Notes

• Liberty took the early lead on a goal at the 1:34 mark from Daniella Rhodes, her team-leading 11th of the year. The Lady Flames led 1-0 for nearly 50 minutes of the game until ODU’s Sanci Molkenboer scored in the fourth quarter (50:15 mark) to even the score at 1-all.

• Rhodes’ goal was the 56th of her career, moving her into sole possession of second place in all-time in program history for career goals. Rhodes broke out of a tie with Agueda Moroni (2016-18) and also ranks second in school history with 144 career points.

• This is the second time in program history that Liberty has won conference tournament titles in back-to-back seasons. The 2013 and 2014 Lady Flames claimed two straight NorPac crowns.

• This was Liberty’s fifth appearance in the BIG EAST title game in seven years. The Lady Flames improve to 2-3 all-time in those games.

• Iritxity Irigoyen, the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player, made 13 saves in the two games while surrendering only two total goals.

• Liberty bolsters its record to 9-7 all-time against ODU. With 16 all-time matches between the teams, the Monarchs are the Lady Flames’ most common opponent.

• Old Dominion held a 12-8 edge in total shots and an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Lady Flames and Monarchs both put five shots on cage.

• Today’s victory was Liberty’s third top-25 win of the season and 13th over the past two years.
