    After making its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships during the spring, the Liberty women’s cross country team opened its fall 2021 campaign in style, Friday at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. Lady Flames Adelyn Ackley and Calli Doan finished 1-2 as Liberty rolled to the women’s team title at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course.

    Five Lady Flames placed among the top six in the women’s 6K as Liberty topped host Virginia Tech by 19 points (18-37) for the victory atop the six-team field. Ackley and Doan were followed closely by the trio of Noel Palmer (fourth place), Grace Dwyer (fifth) and Anna Hostetler (sixth).

    On the men’s side, only two Flames competed in Friday’s 8K race, but both finished among the top 25 percent of competitors. Newcomer Landon Miller, a graduate transfer from Indiana Wesleyan, came in 10th while Kyle Harkabus took 15th.

    Race Reactions

    • This is the second straight season the Liberty women’s squad opened with a dominating victory. The Lady Flames scored a perfect 15 to win the CSU Buccaneer Invitational crown on Jan. 23, 2021.
    • Friday’s race marked the fifth individual victory for Ackley in 10 career cross country races. During four of those five races, Doan has finished second behind Ackley.
    • Hostetler, who closed out the Lady Flames’ scorers with her sixth-place finish, clocked her fastest 6K during her time at Liberty, 22:10.2.
    • In addition to Miller, freshman Ellie Bevan and redshirt sophomore Kristiana Young each made their Liberty cross country debuts Friday evening.
    • Isaac Wendland made his debut as Liberty’s head cross country coach on Friday. Meanwhile, Heather Zealand officially began her second stint on the Liberty staff as an assistant. She previously coached the Liberty distance runners from 2002-11.
