Liberty student-athletes Aaron Anderson, Mya Berkman, Calli Doan, Austin Duncan, Reagan Underwood and Josh Wilson have been honored on the 2021-22 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team.

Doan and Wilson are receiving the honor for the second straight year, while Anderson, Berkman, Duncan and Underwood are all first-time recipients of the award.

Every Commonwealth college and university, including NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and independents, had the opportunity to submit student-athletes to be honored. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school.

A redshirt senior outfielder from Jacksonville, Fla., Anderson posted a 4.0 GPA while earning a master’s degree in business administration and held a perfect 4.0 GPA during his undergraduate studies as an accounting and business major. He was selected as the 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team Member of the Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the top academic award in NCAA Division I baseball. Anderson became the first student-athlete in the history of Liberty Athletics to earn the honor. Also a CoSIDA Academic All-America® Baseball Team member and the 2022 ASUN Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Anderson led the team in batting average (.310), hits (75) and multi-hit games (23) while guiding the Flames to a 37-23 record and an at-large selection to the 2022 NCAA Gainesville Regional.

A redshirt junior center from Marble Falls, Texas, Berkman has excelled in her academic pursuits with a 3.97 GPA in her master’s degree program (accounting) and earned a 3.80 GPA during her undergraduate studies (accounting). Berkman was tabbed the ASUN Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District Team® honors. On the court, Berkman earned ASUN All-Conference first team honors and was a VaSID All-State first team selection as well.

A senior from Apex, N.C., Doan owns a 3.99 GPA as an exercise science major while competing for the women’s track & field and cross country squads. Doan was voted ASUN Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a second straight season and went on to earn 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country second team recognition. She was a cross country All-American, placing 28th nationally, and the ASUN Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year.

A senior from York, S.C., Duncan holds a perfect 4.00 GPA in his cyber security master’s degree program and also graduated with a 3.96 undergraduate GPA as a business major. Duncan became the first player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors, as he was selected to the 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America ® Men’s At-Large second team. Also a CoSIDA Academic All-District® Men’s At-Large team selection and the 2022 ASUN Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Duncan excelled on the course in being named to the PING All-Region team and the ASUN All-Conference first team. Additionally, he earned ASUN All-Championship honors and helped Liberty secure its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship.

A sophomore midfielder from Sinking Spring, Pa., Underwood is maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a digital media and journalism major. She received the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 Award for field hockey, given to the student-athlete with the top GPA at the 2021 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships. During her sophomore season, Underwood tallied three goals, seven assists and 13 points while helping Liberty win its first BIG EAST title in program history and advance all the way to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship title game. Underwood and the Lady Flames became the first team in school history to reach a national championship game.
