BIG EAST Release

Liberty field hockey’s Daniella Rhodes and Azul Iritxity Irigoyen were honored by the BIG EAST Conference, Tuesday afternoon. Rhodes has been tabbed the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Iritxity Irigoyen has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.

Rhodes’ accolade is her second of the season and seventh career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year award. Meanwhile, Iritxity Irigoyen is being recognized as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this year and the eighth time in her career.

Rhodes spearheaded Liberty’s offense in two victories over No. 9 Connecticut and Longwood over the weekend. Last Friday at UConn, Rhodes recorded two goals, one assist and six points in the 4-0 win, the Lady Flames’ fourth straight victory versus the Huskies.

The senior scored Liberty’s second goal of the match at the 16:59 mark on a penalty corner and went on to score the fourth goal of the day on another short corner as time expired at the end of the third quarter. Rhodes also assisted on Lexi Hosler’s goal in the 19th minute which staked Liberty to a 3-0 lead.

On Sunday at home against Longwood, Rhodes broke a scoreless tie at the 46:05 mark with her eighth goal of the season. The Durban, South Africa native also assisted on Martu Cian’s goal in the 53rd minute in an eventual 3-0 win. With Rhodes’ three-point (1 g, 1 a) game on Sunday, she is now tied for second place all-time in program history for career points with 135 (53 g, 29 a).

Rhodes leads the team in goals (8) and points (23) and is tied for first in assists (7) for a Liberty squad which ranks first in the nation in goals per game (4.56), scoring average (4.49), scoring margin (3.72) and assists per game (4.11).

Rhodes also ranks No. 5 nationally in points per game (2.56), No. 8 in assists per game (0.78) and No. 12 in goals per game (0.89).

Iritxity Irigoyen posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 goals-against-average, two shutouts and seven saves in No. 16 Liberty’s pair of victories last week. In the Lady Flames’ 4-0 triumph over No. 9 UConn in what was a rematch of last year’s BIG EAST Championship final, the junior goalkeeper made five saves in recording a shutout.

Iritxity Irigoyen made a diving stop in the fourth quarter to keep the host Huskies off the scoreboard, and UConn was 0-of-6 on penalty corner efforts. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native notched a two-save shutout against the Longwood Lancers, Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.

Iritxity Irigoyen’s shutout was her fourth of the season. The netminder has 13 career shutouts, which ranks No. 2 in program history. All six of Liberty’s victories this year have been in shutout fashion, with the Lady Flames outscoring their opposition 39-0 in those games.

Iritxity Irigoyen is currently No. 4 in the country in goals-against-average (0.83), and Liberty leads the nation in shutouts per game (0.67).

This is the first time Liberty has received both BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same week since Lizzie Hamlett (OPOW) and Jodie Conolly (DPOW) earned the awards on Nov. 2, 2021.

Rhodes, Iritxity Irigoyen and No. 14 Liberty (6-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) will play a pair of home games this weekend. The Lady Flames will face Quinnipiac (4-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) in conference play on Friday at 2 p.m. before hosting No. 1 North Carolina (8-0) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.).

Friday is the Liberty field hockey program’s Cancer Awareness game. For more information and to support the cause, click here.
