Today's Flames Minute: Wednesday
This is your Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Church Mutual Insurance, for this Wednesday, March 25, 2020, I'm Nick Pierce.
We've seen many great moments for Liberty softball in recent years, but yesterday marked the 13th anniversary of one of the biggest upsets for the program. March 24, 2007, in Louisville, Ky., Liberty faced then sixth-ranked Michigan, which had won the national title just two years earlier. The game was scoreless in the sixth inning when Ashley Williams came to the plate.
(Radio call from Nick Pierce)
"The 1-1 - swing, line drive right-center field, base hit! One run is in! That ball's going to roll to the wall, Jessica Moore will score. Two-run double for Ashley Williams and the Flames draw first blood, it's 2-0!"
Liberty pitcher Sarah Ellis completed the shutout and the Flames beat the Wolverines, 2-0. At the time, Michigan was the third highest ranked opponent a Liberty team had defeated in any sport. Ironically, earlier this year, Liberty downed sixth-ranked Michigan, 6-5, on an Amber Bishop walk-off homer.
