Today's Flames Minute: Monday
This is your Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Church Mutual Insurance, for this Monday, March 23, 2020, I'm Nick Pierce.
It's been a historic two year run for head coach Ritchie McKay and the Flames' men's basketball team but one year ago, Liberty celebrated perhaps it's proudest moment. On March 22nd, 2019, in the NCAA Tournament round of 64, 12-seed liberty rallied to beat 5-seed Mississippi State, 80-76, the first ever win for the program in the Big Dance. But with less than eight minutes to go, Caleb Homesley and the Flames found themselves down by ten.
"Coach (McKay) was telling us that there was a lot of time left. He said that the game is a game of runs; we knew that coming in. I thought Lovell Cabbil had a very big impact in that huddle. He tried to tell us, just kept harping on us, ‘we gotta' believe. We gotta' believe. This is the first time we've actually been here as a team, you've just gotta' believe."
In the second half, Homesley scored 22 of his career-high 30 points. Lovell Cabbil finished with 18 and hit a three with 1:16 remaining to give the Flames the lead for good.
