Today's Flames Minute: Wednesday

Brought to you by Church Mutual Insurance, for this Wednesday, March 18, 2020, I'm Nick Pierce.

There may be no NCAA Tournament this year, but on this day 26 years ago, March Madness was running wild in Lynchburg for the first time. March 18th, 1994 – Liberty was coming off it's first Division I conference championship and took on No. 1 Seed North Carolina in Landover, Md., in the first round of the Big Dance. Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Matt Hildebrand led the Flames that night with 20 points.

"Overall, we were able to come out of the game very proud of the effort we had given and felt like we had represented Liberty well."

The Flames led the Tar Heels by two in the second half but UNC would go on to win, 71-51. That Tar Heels team included future NBA stars Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse. The game was Hildebrand's last in a Flames uniform as the senior graduated and went on to play in Canada, as well.
