Liberty Travels to Radford for Big South Tilt, Saturday

The Liberty Flames men's soccer team will travel to Radford, Va., Saturday for a Big South Conference match against the Radford Highlanders.  Match time at Cupp Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The contest will mark the halfway point in the Flames season.  Through their first eight matches of the year, Liberty has posted a 5-2-1 mark on the season.  The Flames opened their Big South Conference schedule with a setback at Winthrop this past Saturday.

Radford is also off to a fast start in 2014, recording a 5-2-2 overall record.  The Highlanders have opened Big South play with a 2-0 mark.

A Look at Liberty
Liberty (5-2-1, 0-1) fell at Winthrop, 2-0, to open Big South Conference play, last Saturday.  Despite the setback, the Flames will enter their contest against Radford with a 5-2-1 overall record.

Liberty's loss at Winthrop was the first time this season, the Flames have failed to score in a contest.  The setback was Liberty's first away from home this year.

The Flames enter the weekend having outscored their opponents, 19-9. They are second in the Big South Conference in goals per game with a 2.38 average and are second in goals allowed with a 1.12 goals per game average. Liberty ranks 11th nationally in goals per game and 16th in total goals in the latest NCAA statistical report released, Thursday.

Six different Flames have netted two or more goals each, while 10 different Liberty players have scored at least one goal in 2014.  Sachem Wilson leads the Flames with four goals and eight points on the year. The junior enters the weekend fourth in the Big South in goals.

Jovanni Chavez, Jamie  Foxwell, Tim Harbison, Bay Kurtz and Khalil Karl have scored two goals apiece.

Goalkeeper Scott Sutarik enters Saturday's contest with a 1.09 goals-against average. The senior's goals-against average currently ranks second in the Big South.  Sutarik has recorded two shutouts this season.

Liberty alumnus Jeff Alder is in his 14th season at the helm of the Flames. Liberty has posted a 132-94-23 mark during his tenure.

A Look at Radford
Radford (5-2-2, 2-0) will enter Saturday's contest with a seven-game unbeaten streak.  The Highlanders have posted a 5-0-2 mark and won three straight matches over the span, including opening Big South play with wins over Presbyterian and UNC Asheville. The Highlanders defeated UNC Asheville, 1-0, Wednesday in their last outing.

Radford has outscored its opponents, 14-7. The Highlanders lead the Big South in goals-against, allowing 0.74 goals per contest. Radford also leads the conference with four shutouts.

Highlanders head coach Marc Reeves is in his fifth season at Radford. Reeves has guided the Highlanders to a 40-32-15 record during his tenure.

Spreading the Wealth
Liberty has had 10 players score at least one goal this season. The Flames also have had six players net two or more goals. Liberty has outscored their opponents, 19-9, and enter the weekend 11th in the nation in goals scored per game. In addition, six different Flames have netted their first goal in a Liberty uniform in 2014.  Freshmen Alan Arellano, Jovanni Chavez, Bay Kurtz and Troy Reeves along with transfer Khalil Karl and junior defender Jamie Foxwell have all scored the first goal of their collegiate careers.

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty is 3-1-1 away from Osborne Stadium this year.  The Flames are 1-1-1 in away contests and 2-0 in neutral site matches.
  • The Flames have scored two or more goals in six of their eight games this season.  Liberty has also scored four or more goals twice in 2014.
  • Newcomers continue to make their mark. The Flames have had six players see significant minutes in five or more matches that were not on the roster last season.
  • With a 4-0 victory over Howard on Sept. 23, goalkeeper Scott Sutarik has amassed 18 shutouts during his career. The senior ranks fourth on the program's all-time list. He now needs one more to tie Dean Short for third place.
  • Sutarik enters the week with a career 0.95 goals-against average.  He ranks third on the program's all-time list.  Assistant Coach Andrew Madero tops the list with a 0.52 goals-against average.  Madero played for the Flames from 2008-09.

A Look Ahead

      Liberty returns home to Osborne Stadium to host the High Point Panthers, Tuesday evening. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
