Emma Hazel swam the 200 backstroke on Saturday at the Toyota U.S. Open.
Junior Emma Hazel and freshman Chloe Harris of the Liberty swimming & diving team earned valuable national-level experience at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open, which wrapped up on Saturday at Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
This weekend's meet featured a unique nine-site format, with competitions taking place concurrently in Greensboro, N.C., Huntsville, Ala., Irvine, Calif., Sarasota, Fla., Indianapolis, Ind., Des Moines, Iowa, Beaverton, Ore., San Antonio, Texas and Richmond, Va.
Liberty Competitors • Fr. Chloe Harris – 100 breaststroke (118th place in 1:16.61); 200 butterfly (64th place in 2:35.40) • Jr. Emma Hazel – 200 backstroke (42nd place in 2:18.58)
Notable • Harris swam a lifetime-best 1:16.61 in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday evening, lowering her previous best time by 2.72 seconds.
• Hazel competed in the Toyota U.S. Open for the second year in a row. While she did not earn an Olympic Trials cut, she swam 1.15 seconds faster in the 200 backstroke today (2:18.58) than she did last year (2:19.73).
• This is the 10th season in a row that Liberty has had participants compete in USA Swimming national meets, and fourth time at a meet hosted in either November or December (also 2011, 2018, 2019).
• Liberty's athletes were attempting to attain qualifying times for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which will be held June 13-20, 2021 in Omaha, Neb.
