Goodwin Scores 1,000th Career Kill in Liberty's 3-2 Loss to Stetson

In a match full of milestones, records and long rallies, Stetson edged the host Liberty Lady Flames in five sets (23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10), Sunday at the Vines Center.

Stetson (5-11, 2-4 ASUN) has won its last three matches, including two ASUN wins this weekend. The Lady Flames (12-7, 5-2) saw their 13-match home winning streak snapped.

Liberty senior Casey Goodwin scored her 1,000th career kill during the second set, becoming the 16th player in program history, and first since Caroline Douglas in 2014, to reach 1,000 career kills.

Today's match was Liberty's Dig Pink Match, as the Lady Flames wore pink warm-up shirts and raised money and awareness for the Side-Out Foundation.

Notable Numbers
• For the match, Stetson outhit Liberty .338-.280. The Hatters also led in block (10-5) and digs (76-71), while the Lady Flames held a 7-5 edge in service aces.

• Eva Deisa led Stetson with 22 kills and added 17 digs, while Elena Djokovic and Kaylee Oscarson (.833 attack percentage, six blocks) both scored 15 kills. Emily DeStaffino totaled 59 assists and 15 digs, while Chelcie Spence registered 21 digs and three aces.  

• Amelia Johnson hit .345 with a career-high and match-high 29 kill sto go along with 12 digs, while Hannah Morris totaled a match-high 61 assists and 10 digs. Goodwin (18 kills, 11 digs) recorded her first double-double of the season, while Anna Gragg hit .619 while sending down 13 kills and Macy Phillips collected a match-high 25 digs.

Match Summary

• Liberty led set one 23-19 before Hatters scored the next four points to tie it. After a Stetson error, Gragg gave Liberty the 25-23 win with a kill.

• Stetson hit .353 during the opening set, led by a 6-0-7 line from Oscarson. Johnson led all players with seven kill for the Lady Flames, who hit .341 during the session.

• Set two went to Stetson, which led from 2-1 until the end of the set. Goodwin scored a pair of late kills to narrow the gap to 24-23, but Brianna Schmid's kill evened the match at 1-1.  

• The guests hit .467 during the second set, while Liberty hit .361 and added four aces. Goodwin scored eight set-two kills.  

• Liberty got off to a great start in set three, leading 16-9 before the Hatters rallied all the way back to tie it at 23-23 and again at 24-all. Johnson sent down kills for back-to-back Lady Flames points to earn the win.  

• Johnson scored 10 kill in the third set for the hosts, who hit .235, while Deisa's seven kills led Stetson.  

• The Hatters pulled away late to win set four 25-17 and force a decisive fifth set, outhitting the Lady Flames .407-.226.  

• Stetson led 8-4 at the court change in set five and Liberty got back to within three at 13-10 after a Goodwin ace, but the Hatters scored the final two points to take the comeback win.   

• The Hatters hit .429 during the final session, compared to .208 for the Lady Flames.

Quick Hits
• Liberty is now 5-1 all-time against Stetson in volleyball.

• Prior to falling in set two, Liberty had won 19 straight sets at the Vines Center dating back to Sept. 7 against Virginia Tech. Liberty's 13-match home winning streak began on Oct. 14, 2018 with a 3-0 sweep of Stetson.

 • Johnson's 29 kills today are tied for the second most by a Lady Flame in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) and only Caroline Douglas (vs. Central Connecticut, Sept. 12, 2014 in Providence, R.I.) had scored 29 kills before in a match for Liberty since 2008, when the 25-point system started.

• Morris' 61 assists are the most by any player in a match at the Vines Center under the current 25-point rally-scoring system. Her 61 assists were also the most by a Lady Flame in a single match since Anna Willey's 63 assists at Gardner-Webb, Nov. 14, 2015.

• Oscarson's .833 (15-0-18) is the best hitting percentage by any player in a match at the Vines Center under the 25-point rally-scoring system.

• Goodwin is the first Lady Flame since Chelaine McCarty (Nov. 7, 2009 vs. Gardner-Webb) to have her 1,000th career kill come in the Vines Center.
