Lady Flames Start Strong on Day 1 of UNLV Rebel Invite

The Lady Flames tennis team got off to a promising start with five wins against just one loss on day one of the UNLV Rebel Invite, Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Both of Liberty's doubles units were victorious, while the Lady Flames also went 3-1 in singles competition in the strong nine-team field.

In doubles, senior Lara Soares and Kalani Soli, playing a competitive match together for the first time, defeated the Iowa duo of Cloe Ruette and Adorabol Huckleby 6-3 in the Flight Two doubles division. Soares and Soli will meet the Purdue Boilermakers' Seira Shimizu and Caitlin Calkins in the semifinals, tomorrow at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Seniors Rebekah Anderson and Maria Medina, competing in the Flight Three doubles draw, bested Zala Dovnik and Alex Sabe of Purdue by a 6-4 score. Anderson and Medina are now 2-0 as a pairing in the fall and will square off with Texas A&M's Katya Townsend and Jessica Anzo in a semifinal bout on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Singles competition featured victories from Soares (Flight Three), Medina (Flight Five) and Anderson (Flight Six). Soares earned her team-leading 11th triumph of the fall in straight sets against Elizabeth Barnickel of Air Force, 7-5, 6-2. Soares will meet host UNLV's Izumi Asano in the semifinals, tomorrow afternoon.

Medina bolstered her fall singles mark to 9-1 with a three-set decision over the Iowa Hawkeyes' Ashleigh Jacobs (6-4, 5-7, 6-0). She will face off against Samantha Li of UNLV in a semifinal bout on Saturday afternoon.

Anderson also needed three sets to pull out a victory. The Fullerton, Calif., native dropped the first set to the Rebels' Alex Calachova, 6-1, but she rebounded with 7-5 and 6-4 victories in the second and third sets to win 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Anderson, now 6-1 in fall singles, will take on Iowa's Danielle Burich on day two.

The Lady Flames' Soli, slotted in the Flight Two singles draw, fell to Jayci Goldsmith of Texas A&M 6-0, 7-5.

The second day of the tournament will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
