Liberty narrowly lost at No. 38 Virginia, Saturday in Charlottesville.
The host No. 38 Virginia Cavaliers edged the visiting Liberty Flames 4-3, Saturday at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
Liberty's setback bring its record to 7-4 on the year and snaps a three-match winning streak. Virginia improves its record to 9-4 on the season and has now won four straight.
The doubles point proved to be crucial in the match, with the Cavaliers winning on courts two and three to take an early 1-0 lead. The two squads split the six singles matches, with UVA sophomore William Woodall clinching the match at No. 4 singles with his comeback victory over the Flames' Goncalo Ferreira (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).

How It Happened • Liberty's No. 1 doubles team of Josh Wilson and Goncalo Ferreira got the visitors off to a promising start with their dominant 6-1 win over Gianni Ross and William Woodall. Since moving into the No. 1 slot in the lineup, the Flames pairing is 3-0. • The Cavaliers' Ryan Goetz and Matthew Lord evened up the doubles session by defeating Liberty's Nicaise Muamba and Rafael Marques Da Silva 6-2. The Flames duo was paired together for the first time in 2020. • In a close match on court three, UVA's RJ Fresen and Spencer Bozsik got past Steve Mundt and Chase Burton of Liberty 6-4, handing the Liberty tandem its second loss of the spring (4-2 record) and providing the home side a 1-0 lead. • Marques Da Silva of Liberty continued his strong play at No. 5 singles for the Flames on Saturday. The Brazil native downed Bozsik in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on court five to even up the match at 1-all. Marques Da Silva holds a 10-1 mark in singles since joining the Liberty men's tennis program in January. • Virginia's top-ranked player in the lineup, No. 121 Ryan Goetz, put the hosts back on top 2-1 with his two-set decision (6-4, 6-2) against his counterpart, Muamba, on court one. The Cavaliers were within a point of victory, 3-1, after Ross' 6-4, 6-4 decision versus Burton at flight three singles. • Flames freshman Deji Thomas-Smith kept Liberty in the match with his straight-sets triumph (6-4, 6-4) on court six against Fresen. Thomas-Smith's fourth spring singles win brought the Flames within a point, 3-2. • Each of the last two matches on court (No. 4 singles and No. 2 singles) featured come-from-behind efforts, one from UVA and one from Liberty. Woodall's 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 effort to overcome Ferreira clinched the match for the Cavaliers and put them ahead 4-2. • Wilson (Liberty), who is a two-time ASUN Player of the Week so far this season, erased a one-set deficit to Matthew Lord and ended up prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Flames sophomore's victory settled the final score at 4-3. Wilson is now 7-3 at No. 2 singles, this spring. • Virginia now holds a 9-0 all-time series edge over Liberty. Saturday marked the first time the Flames have ever lost to the Cavaliers by a single point.
Next Up • The Flames will return home to Lynchburg for their second match of the day against the Bellarmine Knights (5-3). First serve is pegged for 5 p.m. at the Cook Tennis Center. • Liberty and Bellarmine will be meeting for the first time. The Knights will be joining the ASUN Conference for the 2020-21 academic year.
