Ian Sturgill won in singles and doubles, Friday at the River City Open.
All four Liberty Flames men's tennis players won their respective singles matches on day one of Richmond's River City Tennis Open, Friday. The three-day tournament is being contested at the Westhampton Tennis Courts and Collegiate School Williams – Bollettieri Tennis Center.
"It's great to get matches in and gain experience. We are working on fighting for every point and competing to the best of our ability," stated Liberty head coach Derek Schwandt.
In the C Singles flight, Flames sophomore Ian Sturgill defeated Old Dominion sophomore Federico Rebecchini 7-6, 6-3 for his team-best sixth singles triumph of the fall. Sturgill will square off with James Madison's Stefan Petrovic in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Liberty sophomore Steve Mundt also picked up a straight-sets victory, defeating Richmond's Campbell 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the D Singles draw. Mundt's quarterfinal opponent will be VCU's Daniel Khin.
Freshman Deji Thomas-Smith (E Singles flight) won in comeback fashion, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 over Zack Theodossiou of College of Charleston. The London, United Kingdom, native will meet JMU's Will Karpinski on Saturday in the quarterfinal round.
Sophomore William Barker improved to 5-3 in fall matches by capturing his first round match in the F Singles draw. The Statesville, N.C., native outlasted the George Mason Patriots' Ryan Charles in two sets (7-6, 6-3). Barker will face Appalachian State's Blake Carter in the next round, tomorrow.
Barker and Sturgill teamed up to win their first doubles match by a 6-2 score against the Richmond Spiders' Ricky Bell and Alex Wernink. The duo lost 6-4 in the semifinals to Chase Bernstine and Ryan Bernstine.
Day two of the River City Open will feature two rounds of singles on Saturday and a round of doubles.
