The Liberty Flames men's tennis team had a strong 10-win second day at the ITA Atlantic Regional, held at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Six of those seven victories came in singles, while the other four came over the course of three doubles sessions on Friday. Of those four doubles wins, three came from the duo of sophomore Nicaise Muamba and freshman Josh Wilson. Liberty claimed 10 total matches on the day against just four losses.

"We are confident in our preparation and excited about competing for the Flames tomorrow," said Flames head coach Derek Schwandt. "Vince (Salas) and Will (Barker) persevered through tough matches today."

Muamba and Wilson rolled to an 8-1 round of 64 triumph against William & Mary's Sebastian Quiros and Daniel Pellerito. The Liberty team then knocked off Gonzalo Adis and William Karpinski of James Madison, 8-5.

In their third and final match of the day (round of 16), Muamba and Wilson took down Penn State's Zach Lieb and Noah Sutter, 8-3. Friday marked the first time the Liberty pairing had played a competitive match together, this fall. Muamba and Wilson will meet Temple's team of Alberto Caceres Casas and Mark Wallner in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

In singles, the Flames combined to post a 6-1 record. Liberty's upperclassmen – Chase Burton, Eddie Gutierrez and Vince Salas – each delivered victories in their first singles matches in the round of 128. Burton picked up his sixth victory of the fall with a first round win against Georgetown's Luke Ross in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Burton will face Brendan Volk of William & Mary on Saturday morning (9:30 a.m.) in the second round.

Gutierrez, the Flames' active career singles victories leader, earned another victory on Friday with a two-set triumph (7-5, 6-0) against Georgetown's Charlie Sharton. He will move on to face Virginia Tech's Carlo Donato on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Salas stayed unbeaten (5-0) in fall singles with a gritty three-set victory against the Hokies' Evan Fragistas, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5). The Liberty junior advances to day two of the regional, where he will face Ammar Alhogbani of Virginia at 9:30 a.m., tomorrow.

First-year Liberty players William Barker, Ian Sturgill and Wilson all won their respective matches as well on day two of the tournament. Barker, who captured two matches in qualifying yesterday, continued his winning ways with a two-set decision (7-6 (5), 6-2) over Michael Ruamthong of William & Mary, another player who made it through Thursday qualifying. Barker will face off with Old Dominion's Francois Musitelli, Saturday morning.

Sturgill also advanced to tomorrow's round of 64 in the singles main draw by winning a two-set match against Luis Molina of Delaware by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Sturgill, who hails from Madison Heights, Va., will play against the Richmond Spiders' Joe Nardini on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Flames newcomer Josh Wilson also claimed his first match of the event, 6-1, 6-1, over the Longwood Lancers' Julian Farthing. Liberty's Muamba received a bye in the round of 128 and will square off with George Lovitt of Richmond, Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The Flames' Farid Juri fell to Temple's Wallner (6-2, 6-0) on Friday morning in the round of 128.

In other doubles action, Liberty's tandem of Sturgill and Gutierrez cruised to an 8-1 victory in their first match of the day against Richmond's Nardini and Campbell Erwin. The Flames duo met Ryan Kros and Fragistas in the round of 32. Kros and Fragistas won that match 8-3.

The Flames' doubles pairings of Burton/Barker and Salas/Juri both dropped their first matches in the round of 64.

Day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional features two rounds of singles and the doubles quarterfinals, starting with the singles round of 64 at 9:30 a.m. Keep up with the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament Central Page throughout the day tomorrow for updated results.
