Tresor Mbuyu recorded the first hat trick of his career in a 5-0 win at VMI, Tuesday.

Liberty forward Tresor Mbuyu scored the first three goals of the contest, as the Flames overwhelmed the VMI Keydets 5-0 Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field. All three of the senior's goals came in the first half.

The Flames outshot the Keydets, 19-4, in the contest in recording their first shutout of 2018. Liberty moves to 2-0 on the year, while VMI drops to 0-2.

Turning Point
After taking a quick 1-0 lead on Mbuyu's first goal of the game during the sixth minute, Rigo Rojas lofted a pass into the 18-yard box which ended up on the foot of Mbuyu. The senior then ripped a shot into the right side of the net for 2-0 advantage during the 20th minute.

Key Stats & Notes

  • Mbuyu netted the first hat trick of his career and recorded a career-high seven points in the contest. Previously, the senior forward's career highs were two goals twice (at USC Upstate, 9/2/17 & UNC Asheville 10/7/17) and five points (UNC Asheville 10/7/17).
  • Mbuyu netted all of his three goals during the first half on six shots.
  • Mbuyu becomes the first Liberty player to score three goals and have seven points in a games since Aug. 30, 2016. Jovanni Chavez accomplished the feat at Patchin Field in a 5-2 victory over VMI.
  • Matthew Zaczyk scored his second goal of the season, while freshman Shane Geisler netted his first career goal in the match. Freshman Jack Worth picked up his first collegiate point, assisting on Geisler's goal.
  • Brogan Engbers recorded his first collegiate shutout in goal for the Flames. He made one save.
  • Liberty and VMI have met each of the past 16 seasons. The Flames have won the last four meetings.
  • Liberty recorded its first clean sheet of 2018. Last season, the Flames posted seven shutouts.
  • Today's contest began a three-game road swing for the Flames. The swing includes today game along with matches at UCF and East Tennessee State.
