While most of the golf world was watching the action at the 141st Open Championship in Royal Lytham & St. Annes during the weekend, two golfers connected with the Flames golf program made successful showings at state events on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Flames Head Coach Jeff Thomas finished tied for seventh place at the 2012 SunTrust State Open of Virginia, while rising junior Chase Marinell finished second at the 66th Florida State Open.
Thomas posted a four-under par 284 (67-73-73-71) during four days of competition at the State Open of Virginia, this year being held at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va.
Thomas opened strong with a five-under par 65 on day one to hold second place after the first 18 holes of play. After posting consecutive one-over par rounds of 73, Thomas closed with a one-under par 71 on Sunday to share seventh place with Rick Schuller.
Thomas finished nine shots behind tournament champion Jay Woodson, who carded four consecutive rounds in the red to post a 13-under par 275 (71-68-68-68). Woodson, who currently is playing on the developmental NGA Tour, won by four strokes.
Marinell was one of two golfers in the 61-man field at the Florida State open to post three straight sub-70 rounds and posted a 14-under par 202 (65-68-69).
However, the Big South all-conference golfer was still well off the pace, falling nine shots behind tournament victor Chase Seiffert. Seiffert, a rising senior at Florida State, carded a 23-under par 193 (66-64-63), thanks to offsetting two bogeys with 23 birdies and one eagle during his 54 holes of competition.
Marinell circled the Sara Bay Country and the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Clubs in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., recording one eagle, 15 birdies and three bogeys to finish with his 14-under par 202.
Thomas, who will be entering his ninth season, will look to lead Marinell and the rest of the Flames to a three straight Big South Men's Golf title during the 2012-13 season.
Liberty will open the fall portion of its four-event slate at the Northern Intercollegiate, Sept. 8-9, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
