2012 Palmer Cup - Final Results
Liberty golf alum Robert Karlsson claimed one of seven European Team singles victory during the last round of the 2012 Palmer Cup, helping his squad to a dramatic 13.5-10.5 rallying victory over the United States team on Saturday.
Karlsson and his European teammates entered the final round at The Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland down 10-6 to the United States team, which had claimed the last two Palmer Cup trophies.
However, the European team rallied during the last day of competition by claiming seven of eight singles matches and halving the other to secure their first victory in the collegiate Ryder Cup style event since a 13-11 win at Cherry Hills Country Club in 2009.
Karlsson tied the overall match during the final round with his 2-and-1 victory over Stanford's Patrick Rodgers.
Rodgers had an early lead on Karlsson by claiming the second hole of the round, but Karlsson quickly fought back to square the match with a par on No. 3. Pars continued to benefit Karlsson, giving him a 2 up lead as he won holes No. 5 and No. 9.
Rodgers was able to trim his deficit in half by winning at No. 15 and pushed Karlsson to the final hole, but Rodgers would eventually concede at No. 18 to seal Karlsson's 2-and-1 victory.
Karlsson was one of the European team's most consistent golfers during the three-day, four-round match play event, claiming victory in three of his four matches.
Karlsson won both his singles matches, including a 4-and-2 victory over UNLV's Derek Ernst. Liberty's career stroke average record holder also teamed up with David Booth to claim a 2-and-1 foursome win over Blayne Barber (Auburn) and James White (Georgia Tech).
Following the weekend event, the United States team now holds a slim 8-7-1 edge over the European team in the overall Palmer Cup standings.
