The Liberty volleyball team opens its 2012 fall season on Aug. 24 against Bradley at the North Carolina Central Tournament in Durham, N.C.
Complete Season Schedule Liberty has released its 2012 volleyball schedule, as announced today by the Lady Flames' coaching staff. The 2012 season will feature four tournaments and matches against in-state ACC opponents Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Lady Flames will meet five teams for the first time in program history in 2012. Liberty will face three teams that finished the 2011 season with 20 or more wins, in Winthrop, James Madison and UCF. Fans will get to see the Lady Flames at the Vines Center nine times this season. The Lady Flames won their Big South-record sixth conference tournament championship last season, sweeping Radford, 3-0, in the Big South Volleyball Championship final. Liberty went 20-13 on the season, including 12-2 in conference play, earning a tie for its fifth straight regular-season league title. The 2011 team posted its fifth 20-win season in a row, and advanced to the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, facing four-time defending national champion Penn State in the first round. Head Coach Shane Pinder was named VaSID All-State Coach of the Year, and junior middle blocker Loren Thomas was named Big South Tournament MVP. Liberty begins the season at an invitational hosted by North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., Aug. 24 and 25. The Lady Flames meet Bradley in the season opener, and also face Canisius and Elon. The 2012 home opener, Aug. 28, will see the Lady Flames host William and Mary, in Liberty's earliest home match since opening the 2007 season on Aug. 24 at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames travel to Orlando, Fla., where they will compete in a tournament at UCF, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. High school teammates Loren Thomas, Ansley Gebben and Gabrielle Shipe will get to play in their hometown, against UCF, Jacksonville and Columbia. The schedule then takes the team to Ohio, the home state of Kendle Rollins and Jade Craycraft, for the first time since 2007. Liberty heads to Kent on Sept. 7 and 8 to face Saint Francis (Pa.), Kent State and Marshall. Liberty rounds out four weeks of tournaments with an invitational at Virginia. The Lady Flames meets two ACC foes, Virginia Tech and Virginia, on Sept. 15. The Lady Flames opens the conference schedule at home on Sept. 21 with Radford, in a rematch of the 2011 Big South Volleyball Championship final. James Madison will then visit the Vines Center, Sept. 25. A weekend trip to North Carolina will have the Lady Flames face Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville to close out September. Liberty's final non-conference match, at VCU, takes place on Oct. 2. The schedule alternates between home and away conference weekends for the remainder of the season, starting with home matches against Campbell and High Point, Oct. 5-6. Following a weekend trip to Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina, the Lady Flames host Presbyterian College and Winthrop on Oct. 19-20. Liberty plays at Radford on Oct. 26 to end its October schedule. November begins with a weekend in North Carolina, at High Point and Campbell, Nov. 2-3. The Lady Flames host UNC Asheville on Nov. 9, and then close out the regular season against Gardner-Webb, Nov. 10. The 2012 Big South Volleyball Championship will be hosted by Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C., Nov. 15-18. The winner of the conference tournament receives the Big South's automatic qualifying bid to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin Nov. 29.
