Roderick Spruel and the Flames' 4 x 100 relay team advanced to Saturday's IC4A final at the Penn Relays.
Liberty's Friday at the Penn Relays featured preliminary rounds in three men's relays. Two of the Flames' relay squads (4 x 100 and 4 x 200) were successful in reaching Saturday's IC4A finals at Franklin Field. The Flames' 4 x 100 relay quartet of Roderick Spruel, Leonard Robbins, Tarell Williams and ConRoy Smith crossed the line in a time of 41.87 seconds. The effort was the 32nd fastest of 88 teams competing in the preliminaries and moved Liberty into the IC4A final for the second time in three years. Robbins and Smith later joined Maxwell Asante and Andre Washington in posting a 4 x 200 relay time of 1:26.88. With that posting, the Flames came in 17th out of 50 squads and secured another IC4A final appearance. Asante, Robbins, Paul Arslain and Taylor Courtney finished up Liberty's day on the track with a 3:19.00 clocking in the 4 x 400 relay. The Flames ended up 38th out of 66 teams participating in the 4 x 400 preliminaries. Liberty's lone field event athlete competing at this year's Penn Relays, Kevin Reddington came in fifth in the Eastern section of the men's long jump Friday afternoon. He used a favorable wind to help him reach 23-3.25 on his best attempt, just shy of the junior's season best of 23-6. The third and final day of the 118th Penn Relays will begin Saturday at 7 a.m. Liberty's day will get going at 1:47 p.m., when the Flames compete in the men's 4 x 100 relay IC4A final. NBC will air live television coverage of the Penn Relays from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday.
