Liberty volleyball held a clinic for the 50 Plus Group, through Lynchburg Parks & Recreation.

The Liberty volleyball team recently teamed up with Lynchburg Parks & Recreation, providing a clinic for the organization's 50 Plus group.  It was the fifth year the program put on a clinic.

The 50 Plus group, which is headed by recreation specialist Marsha Berry of Lynchburg Parks & Recreation, plays volleyball each Thursday, but welcomed in the Lady Flames for a special afternoon of community involvement.

Nineteen members from the group participated in the clinic, which was held at the Heritage United Methodist Church and lasted an hour long the evening of March 1.

Rising seniors Lauren Bosché and Loren Thomas planned the first half of the clinic, which focused on improving skills at different stations.  Four Lady Flames helped at each section, which included passing, setting and serving, while the participants rotated.

The final portion of the clinic involved playing, as teams were mixed with the 50 Plus group members and members of the Liberty volleyball team.

For Thomas, this was the highlight of the evening.

"My favorite part of the clinic was playing with them," exclaimed Thomas.  "They're just so fun to be around and really did want to learn how to get better at volleyball."

Liberty Assistant Volleyball Coach Becky Rudnick pointed out the talent of the participants, saying, "They are very skilled and competitive.  Some have volleyball backgrounds, or other athletic experience."

Following the clinic, everyone involved enjoyed a meal prepared by the participants, allowing for a time of connection between the two volleyball communities.

Berry said, "The clinic was excellent again this year. It's great to work on our skills, but the group loved the opportunity to play with the Liberty Flames best of all. We hope they will come back again next year."

The Liberty volleyball team is thankful for the opportunity to provide a clinic in the community, and hopes to host the group at a match this fall.  Berry will look to organize that opportunity for the group, as well.
