Kolby Shepherd pole vaulted a season-best 16-6.75 Saturday afternoon at the Texas Relays.
On a day when only three Liberty athletes were in action at the Texas Relays, redshirt senior Kolby Shepherd produced Saturday's biggest highlight. He pole vaulted a season-best 16-6.75 at a crowded Mike A. Myers Stadium. Last season, Shepherd tied the school record in the men's pole vault at the Texas Relays, clearing 17-6.5. This time around, the Georgia native made a first-attempt clearance at 16-6.75 on a breezy day. However, he was unable to go any higher and finished 10th in Section A of the event. At the same time, teammate and fellow Georgia native Ryan Smith was taking part in Section A of the men's shot put. Smith's top throw stretched the measuring tape to 55-2.75 for 13th place. Freshman Mychelle Cumings took part in two throwing events on Saturday. She began her day with a fifth-place finish in Section B of the women's discus. Her best mark of 150-10 made it two straight weeks that the discus school record holder has broken the 150-foot barrier. Cumings later threw the shot put 44-10.25, garnering 14th place in Section A of the event. Liberty will now prepare for its first home meet of the 2012 outdoor season. The Liberty Collegiate Invitational will take place Friday and Saturday at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. Friday's action will begin at 1 p.m., with the decathlon 100-meter dash and women's hammer. The women's pole vault will get things going Saturday morning, with a 9:30 a.m. start time.
