Winthrop earned a 1-0 victory over Liberty, in game one of a doubleheader, Friday, with Chelsey Schoenfeldt's fourth-inning home run providing the winning margin. Liberty record goes to 9-18, 3-4 in Big South play. The Eagles advance to 12-21, 1-4 in conference play with their first win in 12 games. The contest proved to be a pitchers' duel, with Alyssa DiMartino (6-12) allowing one run on just five hits. Winthrop's Natalie Becker fashioned a three-hit shutout, tossing nine strikeouts. For Liberty, Jenny Law went 2-for-3 with a double, while Hanna Nichols reached base on two walks. Kaylee West doubled, hitting 1-for-2. With her double, the 35th of her career, West is tied for seventh all-time at Liberty. Alex White went 2-for-3 for the Eagles, and Schoenfeldt hit her fourth homer of the campaign. DiMartino pitched a 1-2-3 first inning that included two groundouts and a strikeout. With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Jenny Law doubled to the left center gap. She was left on base when Becker fanned West. White hit a two-out single to center in the top of the second, but the next pitch produced a groundout. Hanna Nichols walked and stole second with two outs in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles received a pair of baserunners during the third frame, on a single and a hit by pitch. DiMartino got Kathryn Eberlin to fly to left, ending the top of the inning. Schoenfeldt led off the fourth inning by homering deep over the center field wall, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Two flyouts and a groundout closed Winthrop's fourth time at bat. West walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Becker sent her strikeout total to six by fanning Kelby Allen for the third out. After the Eagles went in order in the fifth, Nichols drew a leadoff walk. Kelly Strickland moved pinch runner Marybeth Sciolino to second with a sacrifice bunt, but Sciolino did not move past second. DiMartino had retired seven batters in a row before Melanie Andrea singled with two outs in the sixth inning. She held the score at 1-0, when Kristy Noble grounded out to third base. West sent a two-out double to the gap in the bottom of the sixth. Becker held off the rally, sending the game into the seventh by striking out Meredith Crisante. A 1-2-3 Winthrop seventh brought the Lady Flames to the plate for the final time. Allen reached via a leadoff walk. Nichols sacrificed, sending Allen to second base. Becker got the next two Lady Flames to ground out, sealing the Eagles' 1-0, shutout win.
