After the first three meets of the 2011-12 indoor track & field season, the Liberty men's and women's teams have both earned rankings in the year's first U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Regional Index. The Flames open the year at No. 5 in the Southeast Region, with the Lady Flames checking in at No. 6. Liberty is the only Big South Conference squad to appear in the Southeast Region women's listing, while Charleston Southern joins the Flames in the men's ranking at No. 14. Liberty athletes top the Big South Conference performance list in numerous events at this juncture of the season. On the men's side, the Flames' conference leaders include Caleb Edmonds (5K), Kolby Shepherd (pole vault) and Ryan Smith (shot put). The Lady Flames' athletes who top the Big South performance list are: Audrey Bamford (pentathlon), Mychelle Cumings (shot put), Jennifer Klugh (3K & 5K), Marianne Wheeler (high jump), Kristen Willeford (high jump) and Jocelyn Williams (weight throw). Liberty is currently preparing for its second home meet of the season, the Liberty Open. The two-day meet will begin Friday at 1:30 p.m. inside the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
