Jennifer Klugh was named Big South Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after winning the women's 5K at the Liberty Kickoff.
After posting impressive performances at the season-opening Liberty Kickoff, Liberty senior Jennifer Klugh was named Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and freshman Mychelle Cumings was tabbed Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. Klugh has now earned eight Big South Athlete of the Week honors during her career, including four apiece in cross country and indoor track. Her latest accolade came after winning her third consecutive Liberty Kickoff women's 5K title on Friday. Klugh's winning time of 17:22.92 put her 23 seconds ahead of the race runner-up, former teammate Rebekah Ricksecker. The time also qualified her for the ECAC meet and was the second-fastest 5K clocking by any NCAA Division I women's runner on the opening weekend of the 2011-12 indoor track & field season. Meanwhile, Cumings made a big splash during the first meet of her collegiate career. The Tennessee native broke a five-year-old school record in the women's shot put with her winning throw of 45-1 on Saturday. Cumings, who also hit the ECAC qualifying standard in the process, now ranks No. 8 in Big South Conference history for the indoor women's shot put. The previous evening, Cumings had placed seventh in the weight throw at 47-8. The effort places her No. 8 on Liberty's all-time weight throw performance list. Liberty will now have a break from competition until Jan. 18, when the Flames and Lady Flames travel across town for the Hornet Sprints, Jumps and Throws Challenge at Lynchburg College.
