Bethany Wakeley swam a lifetime-best 1:02.50 in the 100 fly on Friday.
Liberty's Bethany Wakeley swam a 1:02.73 in the preliminary round of the women's 100-meter butterfly on Friday at the 2011 AT&T USA Swimming Winter National Championships, held at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta. Wakeley posted the 53rd best time out of 137 finishers in Thursday morning's preliminaries. Her time of 1:02.73 was just 0.74 seconds away from the U.S. Olympic Trials 100-meter fly cut of 1:01.99. On Thursday, she had swum 1:03.41 during a 100 fly time trial. She then clocked a 1:02.50 during a 100 fly time trial in the afternoon, setting a lifetime best while drawing to within 0.51 seconds of the Olympic Trials qualifying standard. The Egg Harbor City, N.J. native, entered the meet with a personal-best time of 1:02.61, a mark that she attained during a time trial at this summer's ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Liberty has wrapped up its fall competition schedule. The Lady Flames' team next competes in a quad meet on Jan. 7 in Fort Myers, Fla., hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The meet will feature the Lady Flames and Florida Gulf Coast, along with North Dakota and Georgia Tech.
