Karlsson Named Big South Golfer of the Week

Robert Karlsson closed out his final fall season event in record fashion and earlier today the senior was honored for his efforts by being named this week's Big South Men's Golfer of the Week.

Karlsson carded a 13-under par 203 (67-68-68) to take second place in the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Golf Tournament, earlier this week.

Karlsson's showing on the Kilmarlic Golf Course, a par-72, 6,535-yard course in Powells Point, N.C., set a new career low for the senior. Karlsson's previous career 54-hole low score was a pair of 12-under par rounds of 204 (Renaissance Invitational in the fall of 2009 and the Rio Pinar Invitational in spring of 2011).

The Swedish-born golfer's tournament scoring was the third-best individual 54-hole total in program history. Andrew Turner (2005) and Max McKay (2009) share the 54-hole program record with a 202.

The honor marks the first time this year and the eighth time in his four-year career at Liberty that Karlsson has been named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week.

The career finish helped Karlsson wrap up the fall season with a team-best 71.8 stroke average, lowering his career stroke average to 72.1.

Karlsson, a two-time Big South Golfer of the Year, continues to be Liberty's top ranked golfer. He ranks No. 52 in the latest Golfstat individual ranks and No. 59 in the most recent Golfweek individual rankings.

Karlsson also brings worldwide recognition to Liberty's golf program, as he currently ranks No. 35 in the most recent World Amateur Golf Rankings, which is governed by the R&A and the USGA.

Karlsson and the Flames will have the next three months to polish up their games before returning to the golf links Jan. 30-31 to participate in their first event of the spring schedule.

The JU Invitational, a two-day, 54-hole event, is played at the world famous TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, home of the PGA Tour and the annual host of THE PLAYERS Championship.

This will mark the third-straight season Liberty has competed in the Florida hosted event. Last year, Karlsson finished in second place with a three-under par 213, finishing just two shots behind Florida's Bank Vongvanij, who was ranked No. 1 in the country at the time.
