Matt Olinger has been promoted to Dale Layer's coaching staff for the 2011-12 season.
Liberty Men's Basketball Head Coach Dale Layer has announced the promotion of Matt Olinger to assistant coach. Olinger takes over for Myron Guillory, who recently resigned to pursue other career opportunities. "Matt has been a mainstay in the Liberty Basketball program for seven years," Layer said. "I am impressed by Matt's knowledge of the game and believe he is ready for the next step in his career. Olinger is in his eighth year with the program, having previously spent three seasons as the director of basketball operations, two as a graduate assistant and two as a video coordinator. The Indianapolis, Ind., native has been an integral part of Liberty's success over the last four seasons, helping the Flames to 72 wins. "He has great passion for basketball and will now get to continue to move forward in the coaching profession," Layer commented. "He is ready for this in every way." As the director of basketball operations, Olinger's responsibilities included overseeing film exchange in compliance with Big South Conference policies, facilitating team travel plans, hosting visiting teams and coordinating pre- and postgame meals. He was also responsible for implementing camp marketing strategies, assisting with the oversight of the student managerial staff and overseeing facility upgrades. During Olinger's time at Liberty, he also served as an interim assistant coach during the spring of 2008 and the spring and summer of 2009. As an interim assistant coach, Olinger was active with 2008-09 spring individual skill instruction and spent a considerable amount of time on the road recruiting in both the summer of 2008 and 2009. Olinger graduated from Liberty with a Bachelor's degree in sport management in 2008 and earned a Masters of Business Administration from the university this past May. "I am extremely grateful and privileged for this opportunity Coach Layer has granted me to serve as an assistant coach," Olinger stated. "Coach Layer has done a tremendous job here and I look forward to continue to learn and grow as a coach under his leadership. It has been a tremendous opportunity to work not only at my alma mater but also for an excellent staff and athletic department."
