The Liberty volleyball team got off to a slow start Saturday evening and was never able to recover fully as Charleston Southern took a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-27) decision from the Lady Flames in a Big South encounter.

Liberty, which saw its brief, two-match winning streak halted, is now 7-14 overall. The Lady Flames are 5-4 in Big South play and currently hold the fourth position in the conference standings. Charleston Southern, which won its first Big South match of the season, is 1-8 in league action. The Lady Buccaneers, who took Liberty to five games on Oct. 8 before falling, are 6-16 overall on the year.

The Lady Flames actually scored three of the evening's first four points. CSU then tallied the next five points, including two Renae Popovich kills, to take the game one lead for good at 6-3. Jenni Shepherd posted a kill on game point to give the Lady Buccaneers a 30-21 win.

Game two proved to be a nip-and-tuck affair. The match was tied five times, the last of which came at 17-17 after Kallie Corbin (Fr., S, Beaverton, Ore.) notched a kill. Charleston Southern scored the next three points, two of them coming by way of Shepherd kills. The Lady Buccaneers then went on to win the game, 30-25.

Liberty played better in the middle game, hitting .257 during the stanza. However, the Lady Flames had no answer for the home team's attack. Charleston Southern hit .395 with 22 kills in game two.

Like the second game, game three was a tight battle. A Jillian Worby service error for CSU broke the seventh of the game's eight ties and gave the Lady Flames a 24-23 advantage. Shepherd then stepped up once again, tallying a pair of kills during a 3-0 burst that helped the Lady Buccaneers reclaim the lead for good.

Autum Black (Sr., MB, Mingoville, Pa.) hit a team-high .400 and posted a team-best 10 kills for the Lady Flames. Kendall Nichols (So., OH, Hoover, Ala.) chipped in with eight kills and 11 digs.

Lara Bartolomeo (Jr., S/DS, Huntington Beach, Calif.) led Liberty with 12 digs and also posted a pair of aces. Corbin ended the night with 30 assists, nine digs, six kills and a pair of aces.

Shepherd, who posted 26 kills against Liberty in the teams' first matchup this season, tallied 22 kills on Saturday, leading all players. Nichole Diller went for 10 kills on a .500 attack percentage, helping the homestanding Lady Buccaneers hit .312 as a team. Olivia Terzo ended up with a match-high 16 digs.

The Lady Flames, who have played just a trio of home matches thus far this season, will now return to the Vines Center for six-consecutive home tilts. Liberty will look to extend its four-match home winning streak Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. when it hosts a non-conference match against Charlotte (16-9, 4-4 A-10).
