Liberty Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

AVCA Team Academic Award Official Release

The Liberty volleyball team has been honored as one of the top academic programs in NCAA Division I, receiving the AVCA Team Academic Award. The award was announced Thursday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

A record total of 481 teams, encompassing men's and women's volleyball at the high school and college level, have earned the Team Academic Award. The award, which was first given in 1993, honors volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 grade-point average on a 5.0 scale.

Liberty's volleyball team posted a 3.542 cumulative GPA during the 2010-11 academic year, making the Lady Flames one of two Big South programs to earn the academic award this season. Winthrop was the other conference recipient, with a 3.33 team GPA.

Liberty was one of 91 NCAA Division I women's volleyball programs to earn the award, as 19.25 percent of DI teams collected the honor this season.

It is the second time that Liberty has earned the Team Academic Award. The Lady Flames also garnered the award following the 2001-02 academic season.

Liberty excelled on the court and in the classroom in 2010, highlighted by senior Karyl Bacon being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. In addition, 13 Liberty volleyball players received mention on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.
