Dembowiak Named Golfweek Player of the Week

Golfweek Player of the Week

Following his first career victory and leading the Liberty Flames to the 2011 Big South Men's Golf Championship, Preston Dembowiak has been named this week's collegiate men's golf Player of the Week by Golfweek.

Last week, Dembowiak finished atop the Big South Men's Golf Championship leaderboard with a seven-under par 209 (70-66-73), which was four strokes clear of fellow teammate and tournament runner-up Max McKay (71-69-73-213).

Dembowiak's effort helped Liberty claim its first-ever Big South men's golf title, as the Flames won the three-day event, which was contested at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., by a convincing 31 strokes.

The Flames, now ranked No. 29 in the country by both Golfstat and Golfweek, carded an eight-under par 856 (290-277-289), the second lowest 54-hole team posting in league championship history.

Dembowiak opened the event with a two-under par 70, followed by a blistering six-under par 66 on the second day to give himself a four-shot cushion heading into the final round.

It marked the third time this season the senior has finished a tournament in red figures and lowered his season stroke average to a career-best 72.9. The result also helped him climb more than 30 spots on Golfweek's individual national weekly rankings, as Dembowiak currently ranks No. 170 in the country.

Prior to the start of the Big South Men's Golf Championship, Dembowiak was named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as to the Big South all-conference team for the second time in his career (also in 2009).

Dembowiak became the third Liberty golfer in program history to claim Big South championship medalist honors, joining Yong Joo (2000) and his fellow teammate Robert Karlsson (2010).

Dembowiak, and the rest of the Flames, are now awaiting the NCAA's announcement for this year's NCAA Regionals, with play scheduled for May 19-21 at six locations around the country.

Liberty was awarded the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals by winning the conference championship and will be making its third trip to the event (2003 and 2006 as an at-large program). The NCAA's regional field announcement is slated for May 9.
