Chad Porter, Royal Brettrager and Aaron Thompson.
Chad Porter was selected to the VaSID first team all-state wrestling team, while Royal Brettrager II and Aaron Thompson were each placed on the second team, as voted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) on Friday. Porter, while being a two-time VaSID all-state second team selection (2008 and 2010), makes his first appearance on the first team. Brettrager and Thompson were selected for the first time in their careers. Chad Porter posted a 21-11 record in his redshirt senior campaign for Liberty at 165 pounds, including a victory over No. 14 ranked Pete Yates of Virginia Tech, who earned second team all-state honors. In 2011, Porter made his fourth appearance at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Porter led his team in overall wins (21) and wins by fall (9). The Washington, W. Va., native finished his career with a 105-54 record, tying for sixth on the program's all time wins list. In his freshman campaign, Brettrager posted a 13-13 record, including earning the NCAA East Regional title at 174 pounds to qualify for the NCAA Wrestling Championships. The Kirtland, Ohio, native began the season by winning four of his first five matches, with each win coming by fall. He ended the season with six wins by fall, tying for second on the team. Junior Aaron Thompson stepped in for the Flames at 197 pounds this season, producing a 15-13 record. The Vinton, Va., native tied for the team lead in dual wins (13), which included winning eight dual bouts in a row, early in the year. Thompson was the only team member to take part in each of the Flames' 21 dual matches this season. He came up just short in the NCAA East Regional Championship, earning runner-up honors at the tournament. Virginia and Virginia Tech claimed 12 of the 20 spots on the two all state teams, while also grabbing each of the individual awards. Virginia's 174-pounder, Chris Henrich, was selected as the VaSID Wrestler of the Year for the second-consecutive season, while Virginia Tech's 133-pounder Devin Carter and Kevin Dresser were named the Freshman and Coach of the Year, respectively.
