Max McKay has been named this week's Big South Golfer of the Week following a four-under par showing at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
Following his second four-under par showing of the season, Liberty's Max McKay has been honored as this week's Big South Men's Golfer of the Week on Thursday. During the weekend, McKay carded a four-under par 212 (68-70-74) to finish in a three-way tie for 15th place at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. McKay opened the Houston-hosted event on Friday by posting consecutive sub-par rounds, marking the fourth time this year McKay has posted two sub-par rounds in the same event. The sophomore has broken par eight times this season and has lowered his stroke average to 73.6. McKay's 15th-place finish helped Liberty finish the Border Olympics in fifth place with an 11-under par 853 (280-287-286). Liberty's 853 was the team's third-best 54-hole team total this season, despite the Flames finishing outside the top three in an event for just the second time this campaign. Following the team's showing at the Border Olympics, a field that featured 10 Top 100 programs, Liberty now ranks No. 32 in the latest Golfstat team rankings and No. 31 by Golfweek. McKay is the fourth Liberty golfer this season to garner this Big South weekly honor, joining senior Preston Dembowiak, junior Robert Karlsson (four times) and freshman Ian McConnell. In total, a Liberty golfer has been named Big South Golfer of the Week three out of seven times this spring and seven out of 15 weeks, dating back to the first weekly honor last fall. McKay and the Flames will return to the golf links next weekend to participate in UNC Wilmington's River Landing Invitational on April 9-10. The 54-hole event, Liberty's final tune-up before the Big South Championship, will be contested at the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C.
