Audra Menez netted five goals in Liberty's 19-9 win over Howard on Sunday.
The Liberty women's lacrosse team extended its win-streak to three games, Sunday afternoon, defeating the Howard Bison, 19-9, at Osborne Stadium.
For the second straight contest, the Lady Flames set a new record for largest margin of victory. With its 19-goal performance, Liberty also set a new program record for most tallies in a single game, besting the previous record set last year in a 17-16 overtime win over the Bison (March 6, 2010).
The Lady Flames' victory gives them a 4-3 record overall and a 2-0 posting in National Lacrosse Conference (NLC) play. Liberty is also 4-1 at home this season and 4-0 when playing in Osborne Stadium. With the loss, Howard falls to 3-7 on the year and 0-3 in NLC action.
Jen Moyer and Audra Menez led Liberty with five goals apiece, followed by Kristin Crowley (4), Karis Walborn (3), Jen Freymond (1) and Emily Dinsmore (1). Courtland Lackey paced the Bison with three goals, while Taylor Tynes and Chastity Daley each had two. The Liberty defense held 2010 NLC Player of the Year Desiree Cox in check. Entering the contest with 33 goals on the season, Howard's leading scorer finished with only one goal.
Menez lit up the scoreboard early for the Lady Flames, netting an unassisted marker in the opening 50 seconds. After a Howard goal by Taylor Tynes tied the contest at 27:51, Liberty reeled off six unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes. Crowley opened the run with an unassisted tally.
Menez, Moyer and Walborn also scored during the stretch, while Jordan Richardson chipped in two assists. Crowley and Moyer paced the Lady Flames during the surge with two goals apiece. Moyer's unassisted goal at 17:51 capped off the burst, giving Libery a 7-1 advanatage.
The Bison halted the Lady Flames' scoring streak with two tallies to cut the Liberty lead to four. Crowley then responded with an unassisted goal with 5:54 remaining in the period to secure a first-half hat trick and make it 8-3 in favor of the home team.
Howard once again closed the gap to four with 4:36 left, thanks to a Tyne free position shot. Moyer answered with a goal of her own 22 ticks later to ultimately give way to a 9-4 Liberty lead at halftime.
In the second half, Howard took advantage of a near 14-minute Liberty scoring drought, posting four-straight goals to climb within one, 9-8, with 16:07 left in the matchup. During the Lady Flames' dry spell, Howard's Dailey and Lackey netted two apiece for the Bison.
Liberty then broke the drought with seven goals over the next 9:23, taking a commanding 16-8 lead at the 6:44 mark. Menez shined during Liberty's second big burst of the contest, recording two goals and two assists. Others scoring during the stretch included Moyer, Dinsmore, Crowley, Freymond and Walborn.
Lackey closed out the scoring effort for Howard with an unassisted goal with 6:05 remaining in the contest. Just under the four-minute mark, Candice dished a short pass to Moyer, who finished on the play to put the Lady Flames up by eight. Walborn and Menez chipped in a goal apiece for Liberty, closing out the contest with a 19-9 final.
Liberty outshot the Bison 39-29 and also held the advantage in groundballs (32-22), draw controls (18-12) and team clears (15-11). Kristen Masullo played the entire contest in the net for Liberty, making 12 saves, while Amber Meeks recorded 14 stops in 60 minutes for Howard.
Howard continues conference play on the road, Friday, stopping in High Point, N.C., to take on the NLC's newest member, the High Point Panthers, at 5 p.m.
Liberty will host ACC member Virginia Tech on Tuesday, wrapping up its four-game homestand. Opening draw between the Hokies and the Lady Flames is set for 5:30 p.m.
