Freshman Cameron Richard picked up victories at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with teammate Jordan Jenkins in the Lady Flames 5-2 defeat of West Virginia on Sunday.
The Liberty women's tennis team grabbed the doubles point and four singles matches on Sunday, defeating West Virginia, 5-2 at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. The win levels the Lady Flames at 1-1, while West Virginia falls to 1-4 on the young season. Each doubles match was competitive, as each winning team had to win nine games to claim victory in their respective match. Jordan Jenkins and Cameron Richard won in No. 1 doubles for the Lady Flames, defeating Mary Chupa and Veronica Cardenas, 9-7. In the No. 2 spot, Hannah Fick and Rebekah Jenkins dropped their contest by the same score, 9-7, to Emily Mathis and Melis Tanik. However, Carol Lobel and Valeriya Klintsevich took the No. 3 contest over Catie Wicklinle and Ashley Pilsbury in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (3), to take the doubles point. In singles, the Lady Flames kept their momentum going, taking victories in four of the six contests. Despite dropping the opening set and facing a tiebreaker in the second, senior Jordan Jenkins rallied to take a three-set win over Melis Tanik, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Freshmen Cameron Richard and Alexandra Sheeran both notched their first spring collegiate singles victories. Richard defeated Emily Mathis in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 position, while Sheeran picked up the 6-2, 6-0 win over Ashley Pilsbury in the No. 5 slot. Three sets were needed in the third and fourth singles matches, but the Mountaineers tallied their two points in the match by taking wins in the match-ups. Carol Lobel rounded things off for the Lady Flames in the No. 6 position in the line-up, defeating Anna Radionova, 6-2, 6-4. The Lady Flames return to action when they travel to Davidson, N.C., for a match with Davidson. The Feb. 3 match is slated for a 3 p.m. start time.
