Game Day Central

The Liberty women's basketball team (9-8, 3-1 Big South) will welcome Charleston Southern (9-9, 3-2 Big South) to the Vines Center for the middle contest of a three-game homestand. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, as the Lady Flames seek their 28th consecutive win in the head-to-head series against the Lady Buccaneers.

Liberty, now trailing co-leaders Gardner-Webb and Radford by one-half game in the Big South Conference standings, will attempt to bounce back from a Monday evening 62-53 home loss to the Highlanders.

Meanwhile, Charleston Southern arrives in Lynchburg having won three straight Big South contests, pulling to within a game of first place.

The Lady Flames are 42-5 all-time against Charleston Southern, including their current 27-game winning streak against the Lady Buccaneers. CSU has not defeated Liberty since Jan. 18, 1999.

Liberty owns 16 straight home victories over Charleston Southern, since a Lady Buccaneers triumph at the Vines Center on Jan. 20, 1996.

Liberty and Charleston Southern represent a contrast in styles. The Lady Flames usually control the area around the basket, as they have outrebounded 11 straight opponents and won the "points in the paint" battle six straight times.

CSU, on the other hand, is a perimeter-oriented team. The Lady Buccaneers lead the Big South and rank No. 29 nationally with 136 three-pointers made. They will face a Liberty defense which is listed No. 16 in the nation, allowing opponents to shoot only 26.3 percent from behind the three-point arc.

Individually, the two players to keep an eye on are Liberty 6-3 redshirt junior center Avery Warley and Charleston Southern 5-9 senior guard Katie Tull.

Warley is tied for the conference lead with eight double-doubles this season, five of which have come in the last six games. During last season's home meeting with Charleston Southern, Warley finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She also broke the Vines Center single-game field goal percentage record, making all nine of her field goal attempts.

Warley is on the cusp of a couple milestones. She is four points shy of 800 and 11 rebounds away from 700 for her career.

Meanwhile, Tull is the reigning Big South Player of the Week. She leads the conference in both scoring (15.1 ppg) and three-pointers made (56).

Tull could achieve a milestone of her own on Saturday. With 263 career three-pointers, she is tied with former Winthrop player Tiffany Rodd for the Big South Conference record. Tull's next triple will give her sole possession of the record.

However, Liberty held Tull scoreless last season at the Vines Center, during the Lady Flames' 66-56 triumph on Feb. 22, 2010.
